VASCAR, which stands for Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder, is a method used by law enforcement to measure the speed of vehicles. What is VASCAR?

VASCAR is a system that allows police officers to calculate the speed of a vehicle over a predetermined data. The officer uses the VASCAR / timing system to determine of the target vehicle cues points.  The speed is then calculated using internal circuit system.

This method is often used in areas where traditional radar or laser speed enforcement may not be practical.

How are VASCAR Speeding Tickets Issued?

Observation:

An officer observes a vehicle traveling between two or more cues.

Timing:

The officer actives the system then places it into a different mode. 

Calculation:

The system  calculates the speed of the target vehicle.

Ticket Issuance:

If the calculated speed exceeds the posted speed limit, the officer issues a speeding ticket.

Hidden Police Vehicles:

Police cars that "hide" for issuing speeding tickets are often called "stealth patrols" or "hidden enforcement vehicles." These vehicles are typically placed in locations where drivers might not expect to see a police car, like behind bushes, around bends, or on overpasses, where the officer can monitor traffic without being seen. The goal is to catch speeders who aren't slowing down or following the law simply because they don't see a marked police car nearby.
